Krampus (2015) | Movie Review

You better not pout, you better not cry, you better not shout I'm telling you why~

Merry Christmas!

Hope everyone is having a good Christmas! For those of you who don't celebrate this holiday, I hope your weekend has been fun so far.

Christmas is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year. But while some people would spend time with their family, a glass of wine in their hand and eating Christmas dinner, I prefer to spend my Christmas in my room with good horror movies.

Have you heard of Krampus?

Krampus is a mythical creature that is basically the anti-Santa. He visits you if you've been a bad little boy or girl and leaves you lumps of coal in your stockings or under your Christmas tree.
While this version of the Krampus legend seems harmless the Krampus of this movie is not.

Summary

Max (Emjay Anthony) love Christmas very much but he's been having a hard time keeping his Christmas spirit because of his dysfunctional family. This Christmas in particular was a bad one and Max's family finally drove him to stop believing in Christmas. He was so mad and upset that he made a wish but he didn't expect that his wish would be granted in the most horrible way.

Here's the trailer:

For those who stayed, let me introduce some of Krampus' little helpers. Krampus has a band of little ghouls and monsters that he takes around with him. They basically help him kill and maim any unfortunate family that conjures Krampus.

Some of the monsters look kinda cute but trust me.... They're deadly too.

First off is the Angel. You know those Christmas tree angels that you place at the top of the tree?
Yeah, well Krampus' Angel really flies and not only is she creepy as fuck with her dirty wings and dark circle but she is equipped with a pair of talons on her hands.

She uses those scrawny wings to flit and flap across a room quickly while diving towards you with her talons ready to scratch you to pieces.

Cute, huh?

And then there's this guy. The Jack in the Box.

He looks cute right?

Not.

The Jack in the Box is basically your worst nightmare. He unhinges his jaw like a snake and just swallows you whole.

In the movie, he swallowed a few of the kids whole until he couldn't even move. Like a real snake.

His character together with the next group monsters are kind of like the comic relief of this movie. He's adorable in a brutally gross kind of way.

Next are Krampus' Gingerbread Men.

They're the most CG-looking thing in this movie? I didn't like them very much. While their scenes were cute and funny, I felt like they weren't scary at all.

They're literally just a bunch of gingerbread men. Fucking eat them! =.=

I love teddy bears but this guy isn't the type of teddy bear you cuddle with.

Next are the "Elves". Like how Santa has little helpers, Krampus has his own. They are all hunchbacked and wearing clothes. But all of them look like they're wearing masks.

Krampus

The most noteworthy character I think would be Krampus himself. The first time I heard about Krampus was from this game called Don't Starve. In the game, Krampus will visit you and steal your stuff if you kill too many animals in the game at once.

This movie's Krampus is way scarier.

Just look at how big he is.
Not only that, he's a total dick.

There will be times during the movie where I thought to myself "This is a good message that he's sending" or "Krampus isn't so bad". But he is.

Krampus' hook
The only person who had an inkling about Krampus was Max's grandmother. Apparently, she had once made the same wish Max did when she was a child and her family was taken away by Krampus.

They even had an out of place cartoon animation of what happened to her.

I feel this whole animation made this movie significantly less scary. But I was already kind of unimpressed when Krampus' Gingerbread Men made an appearance. They looked too cartoon-y.

The Ending

The whole movie is about family, love and sacrifice. It emphasizes on all of these things all throughout the movie. From the dysfunctional family that can do nothing but bicker and fight, they band together to keep each other safe and even sacrifice themselves for everybody's sake.

I expected everything to turn back to normal when Max offered himself up as a sacrifice for his family to Krampus.

Krampus just laughs in his face and throws Max into the lava pit anyways. #brutal

Would I watch this again?

Uh..... No. It's good but not great. I didn't like the cartoonish Gingerbread Men and that random animation in the middle of the movie. I loved all the other monsters. They were scary yet still adorable.

The story is kind of slow and predictable. The characters don't really stand out.

Thankfully this movie is available online and I didn't have to pay to watch it....
